Support, Align & Mobilize
During this three-session webinar series, we will be reviewing basic body to equipment measurements, hands on postural assessment and identifying alignment and equipment set up issues specifically related to changes impacted by hemiparesis and asymmetrical posture
Dates: May 6, 13 & 20
Time: 12:00 - 1:30 each day
Instructor: Sheila Buck
Sheila is an Occupational Therapist from Ontario, Canada and has been actively working in the field of seating and mobility for over 30 years. Sheila provides consultation and education in the area of seating & mobility, accessibility, and ergonomics, through her company Therapy NOW.
Session 1:
This session will provide a comprehensive learning opportunity for Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Rehab Assistants , on understanding critical clinical assessment data and measurements that lead to rollator walker, seating and wheelchair use whether in loaner, rental or purchase situations. We will review how to complete the client assessment related to individual gait patterns and/or balance and postural alignment. Participants will understand how to assess the relevant client postural and weight bearing data related specifically to asymmetry from hemiparesis and weakness. We will review what basic assessment information is needed to determine the design and set up of varying walker and wheelchair frames and seating components to maximize safety, mobility and independent functioning.
Session 2:
This session will provide an overview of basic seating and mobility theory and MAT assessment data required to prescribe/set up a wheelchair and seating whether it be rental, loaner or purchase to prevent sliding, asymmetrical posturing or skin pressure points. We will review how to assess for and maximize hand and foot prolusion by supporting/aligning the affected limb as well as the pelvis and trunk. The use of positioning devices to prevent sliding will be discussed related to restraint use as well as pressure management.
Session 3:
This session will utilize case studies to review seating and mobility solutions in the provision of rollator walkers, manual wheelchairs and seating components. Participants will be highly encouraged to share client scenarios as well as to participate in discussion of solutions to gain a better understanding of the critical assessment and prescription/set up pathway to ensure safe and symmetrical functioning to prevent challenges related to sliding, asymmetry and pressure.
