Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) is a District Stroke Centre serving the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge (HKPR) area. PRHC was designated as a District Stroke Centre in 2004 and was awarded Stroke Distinction by Accreditation Canada in 2018. HKPR is within the Northeast Cluster of the Central East Local Health Integration Network (CE LHIN).
In addition to the District Stroke Centre at PRHC there are four community hospitals in the HKPR Stroke District: Haliburton Highlands Health Centre (Haliburton and Minden), Ross Memorial Hospital, Campbellford Memorial Hospital, and Northumberland Hills Hospital.
Hyperacute:
The HKPR District Stroke Centre is the tPA delivery site and EVT triage centre for the HKPR District. PRHC triages approximately 700 Stroke/TIA patients every year in the Emergency Department. PRHC is supported 100% by Telestroke and is one of the highest users of Telestroke in the province.
Stroke Unit:
PRHC has an Integrated Stroke Unit for patients requiring hospitalization after stroke. PRHC admits approximately 275 acute stroke patients every year from the Peterborough area. Approximately 40% of these patients remain at PRHC for further rehabilitation. Patients from other areas within the district may be repatriated back to their community hospitals for care.
Rehabilitation (Inpatient & Outpatient):
PRHC has an Integrated Stroke Unit offering complete rehabilitation services including nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and social work. PRHC also has an Outpatient Neuro Rehabilitation Program that services the entire district offering physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology. Some patients may also be suitable to attend a Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Program at various locations across our district. A physician/nurse practitioner referral is necessary to access these programs.
