The Enhanced District Stroke Centre is located at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie. The Simcoe Muskoka Acute Stroke Protocol governs the ambulance dispatch response within Simcoe/Muskoka and a small section of East Parry Sound and Northwest Haliburton. The objective of the protocol is to quickly assess and transport eligible stroke patients to the closest and most appropriate hospital for assessment and consideration of hyperacute stroke therapy. Paramedics apply criteria outlined in the Provincial Paramedic Prompt Care for Acute Stroke Protocol to assess whether the patient should be transported to the closest stroke centre. Those that meet the criteria may bypass their community hospital.
RVH provides access to Code Stroke Physicians for assessment and administration of tPA as well as assessment and coordination to access Endovascular Treatment (EVT) Centres in the GTA for EVT candidates.
There are two integrated stroke units (ISU) in Simcoe, RVH and at Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital (OSMH).
Inpatient stroke rehabilitation care is available on the ISU at OSMH and RVH. GBGH provides inpatient rehabilitation on a general rehabilitation unit, which stroke patients can access along with other populations.
Outpatient stroke rehabilitation care is available at OSMH and RVH.
