“The need for long-term care following a stroke is influenced by changing physical, mental, and/or cognitive functional capacities, their abilities and levels of independence prior to the stroke, and the availability of family and informal caregivers” (2013 Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke) . Approximately 1 in 5 residents of LTC in Ontario have a diagnosis of stroke ( Ontario Stroke Network, 2016). In general, residents of LTC are older, frailer, more complex and have higher care needs than in the past.
The information provided here will support long-term care homes in their continued effort to ensure residents who have experienced a stroke receive best practice care.
